Trump’s DOL Pick Will Hurt Workers

Trump’s pick to head the Department of Labor is a threat to working families. Eugene Scalia, the nominee for Secretary of Labor, has spent his entire career making life more difficult and dangerous for working people. He has a long history of representing corporations and wealthy interests over working people.We must urge Congress to oppose his confirmation!

Scalia’s most prominent labor case was leading the attack on the fiduciary rule, which safeguarded workers’ retirement security by ensuring that investment advisers are acting in the best interest of workers and do not have a conflict of interest. Ultimately, he got the rules thrown out, leaving workers vulnerable to conflicting advice on their retirement accounts.

His other attacks on working-people include his fight against OSHA’s ergonomics rules; putting workers at risk for injury, striking down a Maryland law that would require businesses to spend a portion of their payroll on providing private health insurance or paying into the state Medicaid fund, siding with a casino’s arbitrary “tip pool” rule that required dealers to unfairly share tips with their supervisors, and defending a big bank in a sexual harassment case where he aggressively questioned the victim to the point of tears.

Scalia will advance Trump’s Department of Labor policies of the past two years: putting employer interest over the well-being, health, and safety of workers. His nomination is expected to move forward in September. Stay tuned for future actions as we prepare to fight his nomination.
