Stop the 1% from Hijacking Our Elections
On Monday, July 16, the Senate will take up a bill that will help restore true democracy by taking action against the disgusting outpouring of secret money by the richest of the 1 percent in our elections.
Since the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court “Citizens United” decision, this unlimited and anonymous spending has created a real barrier to economic and social justice for working families, students, immigrants, average Americans.
If we allow this to continue, these secret and unlimited contributions will destroy our political process. Super PACs already have spent nearly $140 million on political campaigns just in this 2012 election cycle.
That’s not what democracy looks like.
Will you take action to start the fight-back? Click here to send a message to your Senators – stop secret campaign spending.
The DISCLOSE Act of 2012 ends the ability of the wealthiest of the 1 percent, people like the Koch brothers, to hide behind anonymous political attack ads. It’s an important first to restoring democracy to our electoral process.
But every Senator needs to hear from us. It’s important that we all contact our Senators and urge them to vote yes on Monday so that this bill moves forward to a full Senate vote. Will you join this important effort?
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and the bill’s Senate cosponsors are taking a stand for democracy. Will you? Please join the fight. Click here to send a message to your Senators that democracy in our elections matters.
