Labor LedeA caravan of Uber and Lyft drivers is making its way from Southern California to Sacramento this week to advocate for Assembly Bill 5, a California state legislature bill that would make the misclassification of employees as independent contractors more difficult. The legislation expands on Dynamex, a unanimous decision by the California Supreme Court last year that found truck drivers working for the delivery service were being misclassified as independent contractors. Misclassifying employees as independent contractors allows unscrupulous employers to skirt many wage and hour laws and basic workers’ rights and protection; and it prohibits the misclassified workers from forming unions.
