CWA Members Will Join Today's #FreeOurFuture Rally in San Diego

Communications Workers of America (CWA) activists are proud to join members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), MiJente and other immigrant rights advocates today at Chicano Park in San Diego, CA to demand an end to the inhumane mistreatment of immigrant families at our borders. The rally begins at 9 a.m. PDT.

The Trump's administration's decision to adopt a zero-tolerance policy at the border has resulted in thousands of children, toddlers and infants being separated from their families and sent away to detention centers and tent cities miles away. Although the Trump administration has taken some steps to undo the consequences of its own policy, there are still over two thousand children who are not with their families. Furthermore, this administration has failed to provide a formal process to reunite families and cannot guarantee there won't be any future separations. Billions of taxpayer dollars are being spent on corporate-owned detention centers, adding a profit motive for keeping families and children apart.

CWA has long supported comprehensive immigration reform that takes into account the decades of U.S trade and foreign policy towards South and Central America that has contributed to the crises immigrants are attempting to escape. Such reform should include a roadmap to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, an end to programs that encourage the exploitation of immigrant workers and protection for immigrants covered under the TPS and DACA programs.

Many union members, their parents, or their grandparents made the difficult decision to come to the U.S. to escape oppression, violence and poverty. They came with a commitment to work hard and a hope to provide a better future for their children. It is with the same hope that the overwhelming majority of immigrant families come to our borders, only to be met with the Trump Administration’s hardline, racialized immigration policies.

Today CWAers will participate in direct actions in various states including California, Texas and Arizona to demand the immediate reunification of families and a fair immigration system that protects all working people.
