CWA Verizon California Opening Statement January 28, 2013

CWA Opening Statement
January 28, 2013

The CWA Bargaining Committee looks forward to working with Verizon in this round of
triennial bargaining.

Verizon California is a leader in the telecommunications marketplace, largely due to the
fact the members in this bargaining unit have worked hard to keep Verizon California
number one in the Country, providing great revenues for Verizon. CWA members built
this network! They built this Company!

Verizon Chairman, Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdam told investors recently “that
the Company’s fourth quarter was its best quarter ever. Verizon added 2.1 million net
subscribers during the quarter, a historic high for the Company. Thirty Percent of our net
ads are new to Verizon.”

This historic high for the Company is because the members who work every day for
Verizon make it number one!

Net Promoter scores and overall satisfaction of customers has gone up, which is a tribute
to our Customer Sales Consultants who bundle the “Share Everything” plans. Verizon’s
stock is up and profits are up. Thanks to the workers.

We know Verizon wants to continue to migrate customers off of the copper network and
on to the fiber. We want that work. Outsourcing and contracting bargaining unit jobs has
to cease. We have the trained technicians to do the work.

CWA has partnered with Verizon California to achieve the success in the legislature for
the State Franchise agreements, the Digital Infrastructure and Video Competition Act.
This partnership was to create jobs and to do away with the digital divide. CWA is
willing to continue to partner when it benefits our members’ jobs and families. We
believe that the members here in California deserve better than what we have seen agreed
upon in the recent past.

Our members come to work every day to make the financial numbers for this Company
and the proof is in the revenues. Total revenues for 2012 were $30 billion.

In these negotiations you will see by the proposals the Union will offer that we are
willing to continue this partnership. We want our members to have career jobs with
Verizon. We want to keep our members working and continue to keep Verizon number
one in telecommunications.

Thank You,
Ellen West
