DISTRICT 9 E-NEWS

Across the new DirecTV unit in District 9, mobilization is increasing for a new contract.  Mobilization is an information/action program that allows every member to play a positive role in improving working conditions and building a strong voice at work. Pictured are activities from 9408-Fresno, 9415-San Leandro, 9421-Sacramento, and 9423-San Jose. Member involvement is the CWA way!

On the Legislative/Political front, after a successful fight to stop the BAD bill AB2395, CWA Locals have been active in pursuing other goals of endorsing (or NOT) California ballot initiatives. As of the date of this newsletter, 17 initiatives have qualified for the November ballot and recommendations by the D9 Team have gone out for Local input. Local activists and CWA District 9 will attend the AFL-CIO Conference in early July to voice our position pending a vote on the AFL-CIO statewide recommendations. Please see your Local Legislative Political Committee for more information and any more that may come up in initiative-happy California. Stay tuned!

Representatives from around the country joined with District 9 at the June CWA National Legislative Political Conference in Washington DC. Exciting speakers included Elizabeth Warren, Secretary of Labor Tom Perez and an icon of the Civil Rights Movement, Congressman John Lewis. Prior to the Conference, a National Presidents Meeting was held, where Locals debated and voted on appeals. District 9 was in the house in full force.

Intensive Legislative Political Boot camps continue in both So. California and No. California (see photos). Activists from Local 9404, 9415, 9421, 9423, 9119, 9413, 9333, 9416 and 9408 learned and practiced skills for conducting phone banks in their Locals and set dates to accomplish just that. Rest assured, the ability for the middle class and working families to safeguard and build on issues important to us will be at the forefront of the November general elections in the USA. See your Local to join in on moving forward on candidates and initiativescoming up in November 2016.

Mobilization continues in fight for fairness at AT&T.  Weekly conference calls, on a secure connection, are conducted to discuss and share ideas for campaigns designed to ratchet up the push for a fair contract in a way that involves our membership and grabs the attention of the Company. Stay in touch with your Local for events coming up in your area.  9421, 9511 & 9509 show CWA in action!
