Verizon 2013 Opening Statement

VERIZON 2013 OPENING STATEMENT

It would be foolish for either party to not recognize that we enter these triennial negotiations at a time where labor relations with Verizon are severly strained.  CWA does not intend to focus the atmosphere; rather we intend to take the high road and begin the process with optimism that we share a mutual goal of solving the problems that have created this tension.  To that end, representing our union at this table is an elected committee and chair that I know to be among the best problem solvers in the leadership of this bargaining unit.  Ellen, Greg, Lisa and Robert all share my view and have my absolute full confidence going forward.

In this spirit, CWA's proposals are concise and specifically designed to address, in forward thinking way, the concerns of our members, their working lives and the welfare of their families, with fairness as the overall watch word.  We intend to conduct these negotiations with a pacing that gives appropriate attention to each of these issues and leads to a settlement on or prior to the expiration date of the contract.  We sincerely hope that the company shares this goal and conviction.

Lastly, for these negotiations to be successful, neither party should rely on what they believe to be simple patterns and templates.  Many of the issues we will be addressing are in fact unique and that along with this unit's specific productivity and importance of the California market, must be recognized as we roll up our collective sleeves and apply the diligence that each issue is due.

As Vice President of District 9, I stand ready to assist these negotiations in all ways necessary to achieve the goal of an overall agreement that raises the standards enjoyed today by our members.
